Abstract
Did you know that at least 8% of global emissions caused by humans come from the cement industry alone? During this talk we will discuss the different initiatives and approaches that the cement industry has implemented in the past century to reduce its carbon footprint. In addition, we will talk about Sublime Systems' breakthrough work in decarbonizing the cement industry with the first "true-zero" process that manufactures cement without fossil fuels or limestone.

Dr. Luis Baquerizo completed his PhD in Materials Science focusing on Cement and Concrete at EPFL - Switzerland under the supervision of Professors Karen Scrivener and Thomas Matschei, two of the world’s leading cement and concrete researchers. He worked at Holcim and Lafarge in Switzerland and France in several R&D scientist and team manager roles for about 10 years. Then in 2020, he joined Cementos Pacasmayo, a leading cement and concrete producer in Peru, as Head of R&D. Through these experiences he has accumulated great expertise spanning fundamental cement chemistry, new product development, and field applications of concrete. He joined Sublime Systems as Head of Product R&D about seven months ago, where he leads a team of about 14 researchers and technicians who are validating and improving Sublime Systems' decarbonized cement. Luis enjoys outdoor activities with his kids and wife, watching movies and documentaries (especially those related to climate change and the environment), traveling, and hanging out with friends having a good beer.
