Unintended Consequences of Science and Technology
Advances in science and technology have historically provided us with great benefits in terms of economic growth, health care, travel and, in short, the quality of life on this planet. These same advances, however, have often presented challenges in terms of unanticipated or, perhaps better, unintended consequences. From the Internet to genomics to air travel the unintended consequences are today among our greatest headaches. This dialogue will consider how to addresses such issues going forward.
ABOUT OUR SPEAKER
Dr. Latanision is a Senior Fellow in the Materials and Corrosion Engineering Group at Exponent Failure Analysis Associates. He focuses largely in the areas of materials processing and in the corrosion of metals and other materials in aqueous environments. He specializes in corrosion science and engineering with particular emphasis on materials selection for contemporary and advanced engineering systems and in failure analysis. Dr. Latanision is a previous Director of The Uhlig Corrosion Laboratory at MIT. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Fellow of ASM International and NACE International. Dr. Latanision has served as a member of the National Materials Advisory Board of the National Research Council and now serves as a member of the NRC’s Standing Committee on Chemical Demilitarization. Dr. Latanision was appointed by President George W. Bush to membership on the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, and was reappointed for a second four-year term by President Barack Obama.
