Materials Application Engineers are responsible for having a deep understanding of the complex interactions between material composition, material processing, and material properties. For a Materials Engineer that is responsible for powder-bed manufactured aerospace components, those interactions become even more complex and impactful, because of the relatively high degree that the additive manufacturing processes influence material capability and durability. From powder feedstock morphology to additive machine architecture and stability, and then to post processing and surface enhancement processes, the Materials Engineer must fully grasp the impact that each manufacturing step can have on the ultimate capability of their component. The three-dimensional complexity of additive components also puts forth inspectability challenges and reduced line-of-sight to some surfaces. The ability of additive manufacturing techniques to manufacture thin walled components (often with rough surfaces) creates the challenge of properly accounting for thickness-based mechanical property differences. And finally, the occurrence of material anomalies such as porosity, lack of fusion, and build-related cracking makes characterization of material properties and consideration of rogue features more challenging.
Dr. Andy Perry is currently Principal Engineer for Additive Materials at GE Aviation (Lynn, MA), since 2017. He works to collaborate across partners at GE Aviation and GE Additive to drive materials development and materials processing strategies. He continuously seeks to capture and generalize lessons learned and best practices with additively manufactured components. Prior to working full time on Additive Materials, Andy was the Manager of the GE Aviation Lynn-based Materials Engineering Team and Laboratories from 2006 to 2017, and a Materials Application Engineer at GE from 2004-2006. Before coming to GE, Andy worked for Praxair Electronics (2000-2004) and Bethlehem Steel (1998-2000). Andy lives in North Andover, MA with his wife, three children, and two dogs.
