Abstract
Implementing new technologies to a large volume, high-speed manufacturing
requires in-depth understanding of materials’ chemistry, phase morphologies,
transformations, and processing.
Stainless steels and specialty alloys bring unique challenges due to their
complexity and broad range of potential applications. Improving surface
properties of these materials without compromising their corrosion and
micromechanical performance is especially important. Nano-engineering of
single-phase compound layers containing “m” phase and superlattice structures
produced by plasma-based techniques will be reviewed. These have been
successfully utilized for 3D design and manufacturing of multilayered coatings
on austenitic and martensitic steels, and on other materials.
Applications to products with high-aspect ratio profiles and to heavy machinery
will be presented.

​Dr. Krassimir G. Marchev is Professor of Advanced Manufacturing at College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University. He is also Director of Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering Technology Programs at CPS. Dr. Marchev holds an Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Materials Science and Solid State Chemistry from Northeastern University.
Dr. Marchev returned to NEU after a long and enjoyable career in industry, where he served as Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer of OptoGlo Inc., Director of Innovations of Milara Inc., and Senior Scientist and Team leader at the South Boston Innovation Center of P&G-Gillette. His expertise in materials nano-engineering, advanced product and technology development, physical metallurgy and surface science, were instrumental to the development of some of the most advanced Gillette blade edges such as the Fusion ProGlide.
As a member of the Executive committee of AVS conferences on Surface engineering (ICMCTF) he edited a number of volumes published by Elsevier scientific. For a decade, he shared his expertise at various panels at the National Science Foundation. Currently, Prof. Marchev is a member of the Executive committee of the Boston chapter of the American Society of Metals. Dr. Marchev has supervised and mentored many NEU coop students while in Academia and industry.
​Prof. Marchev was awarded the honor of Fellow of ASM at IMAT 2023 and was our previous president for the 2022-2023 season.
