Abstract
The ASM-Fellows Award Lecture gives the recipient a chance to reflect on how one’s professional life has evolved.  It is good to think about how key society attributes such as friendship, fellowship, mentorship, service, collaboration, and inspiration have contributed to your personal development.  It is also important to recognize the relationships you have established with your colleagues and sponsors.  NASA has played a huge role in my career and tonight I will discuss how the agency shaped my career and revisit some of the contributions my group has been able to achieve - in large part due to collaborative investigative campaigns within my peer network.

Tufts University

Douglas Matson is a Full Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Tufts University.  He is a Fellow of both the American Society for Materials (ASM International) and the American Society for Gravitational and Space Research (ASGSR) and he co-leads the Tufts chapter of Engineers without Borders.  Previously, he worked for ten years as a Lead Test Engineer designing, building, and conducting vacuum thruster firing tests on satellite propulsion systems for the Aerojet Liquid Rocket Company in Sacramento CA and for three years as Lead Materials Engineer on the SSME Technology Test Bed Engine at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville AL for Aerojet Propulsion Division.  He received his BS degrees in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University and Mechanical Engineering from California State University - Sacramento, his MS in Materials Science from UC-Davis, and his Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering from MIT.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in Chemical Engineering in California and serves as co-chair of the US National Academies Committee on Biological and Physical Sciences in Space.  He has conducted numerous reduced-gravity physical science opportunities including parabolic aircraft missions on the KC-135 Vomit Comet at Johnson Space Center in Houston Texas and the Novespace A300 Zero-G in Bordeaux-Mérignac France, drop tube experiments at Vanderbilt and at NASA/MSFC, the TEXUS-49 DLR sounding rocket experiment from ESRANGE Space Center outside Kiruna Sweden, and three space experiments (STS-65, 83, and 94) as TEMPUS lead scientist on the NASA space shuttle Columbia.  He has two ongoing space collaborations on the ISS; a thermophysical property measurement program using the JAXA Electrostatic Levitator ELF and a solidification phase selection experiment using the ESA/DLR electromagnetic levitator ISS-EML in a collaboration where he serves as ESA Speaker/Chairman of the Investigator Working Group and as NASA Facility Scientist.  He currently serves as the chair of the International Space Station National Laboratory User Advisory Committee coordinating the science needs of the US Low-Earth Orbit community.
