Victor K. Champagne, Jr.

Dr. Victor Champagne is a senior scientist at the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) He is recognized internationally as one of the foremost authorities on Cold Spray and has held numerous positions throughout his career with industry and academia. Dr. Champagne has been an associate researcher at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in the Materials Department since 1985 and is a thesis advisor numerous universities including; Pennsylvania State University, Florida International University, South Dakota School of Mines, Università del Salento, Lecce, Italy and others. He conducts materials research in collaboration with dozens of universities, research centers and private industry In his 36 years of materials research and development experience, he has been responsible for the advancement of emerging technologies for the Department of Defense that have led to commercialization. One of his most significant achievements, was the establishment of the ARL Cold Spray Center, which he led for over twenty years, and is devoted toward research, development and implementation of Cold Spray. Currently, he is continuing to make extraordinary advances in Additive Manufacturing and the transition of technology into commercial applications.

Dr. Champagne was made an ASM Fellow in 2015 and is editor of the first comprehensive reference book on cold spray entitled, “The Cold Spray Materials Deposition Process”. Recently, he was awarded a commendation for establishing the ARL Northeast satellite and the transition of cold spray technology. He is known throughout DOD and the private sector, as someone who ‘gets things done’, working diligently to transition emerging technologies throughout the defense industry.

As an advocate of the environment, his research has helped to lower hazardous waste and other pollutants associated with materials and manufacturing processes. In 1998, his achievements were honored by President Clinton and by the Pentagon in 2007 and 2009, where he received the US Army R&D Achievement Award. Dr. Champagne was part of a research team that received the DMC Award in 2007 for cold spray and was awarded an Industry Achievement Award at the North American Cold Spray Conference in October 2011, ESTCP Program of the year for Cold Spray in 2012 and for the Defense Manufacturing Program of the year in 2013 for the transition of cold spray.
