Abstract
Cracking is a common failure mode in polymers, arising from various factors including the magnitude, duration, and rate of loading. These factors are often compounded by environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures or chemical exposure. Fractography, the study and analysis of fracture surfaces, plays an important role in root cause investigations by enabling engineers and scientists to trace the initiation and development of cracks in polymers. The presentation will delve into the unique fractographic features tied to different cracking mechanisms across a range of polymers. It will particularly focus on environmental stress cracking (ESC), a common failure mechanism which may render polymers susceptible to cracking when exposed to both moderate tensile stresses and incompatible chemicals (ESC agents) over extended periods. Insights on the effects of stress and ESC agents on the resulting fracture surfaces of industrially significant polymers, such as Polycarbonate (PC), Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), and Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride (CPVC), will be highlighted.​

Dr. Michael Kreder is a Managing Scientist at Exponent, Inc. He specializes in helping clients tackle complex, multi-disciplinary challenges related to the end-use performance of polymers such as elastomers, rigid plastics, adhesives, sealants, coatings, paints, textiles, membranes, and foams in a variety of applications, including automotive, pharmaceutical/medical device, oil and gas, construction, and water distribution.  His consulting services including failure analysis, processing and yield improvement, material selection, litigation support, and intellectual property.

The presented work was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Jericho Moll, Dr. Corissa Lee, and Dr. Emily Fitzharris of Exponent.
