NEXT MEETING
March 23, 2017 Dr. Christian Hoepfner Executive Director Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems CSE presenting Photovoltaics - The Path to Ubiquity The cost of PV modules and other hardware has decreased significantly during the last decade. Accordingly, most new power generation capacity installed in the US is now renewable, primarily solar and wind. While Si based PV modules are now a very mature technology, further potential for performance increases and cost reduction exist. Recently, much focus has been put on the soft cost of PV installations, as this has become the largest share of installed cost in the US.
The presenter has been deeply involved in the development of technologies which address the installation cost issue. The presentation will outline the general approaches, and then dive into examples such as light-weight, glass-less modules, adhesive mounting, as well as electronic and software solutions. About the speaker: Dr. Christian Hoepfner is the Executive Director of the Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (CSE) in Boston, MA. Before joining Fraunhofer CSE in 2009, Christian was Vice President of Product Marketing and Management at Luminus Devices, which grew from an MIT start-up company to a world leader for specialty LED products. Prior to this, he worked at LNL Technologies, Bandwidth Semiconductor, and Spire Solar in a wide range of roles and technology areas, including lasers, photo detectors, III-V semiconductor device design and processing, planar light guides, and chemical vapor deposition. Christian has a Masters Degree in Chemistry, and received his PhD from the Free University Berlin, Germany, for work in thin film photovoltaics. LOCATION & SCHEDULE
