Abstract:
Models of fluid flow, heat transfer, and mass transfer have become ubiquitous in materials processing. With the power of modern parallel computers, unprecedented complexity has now become routine. Nonetheless, a gap often remains between the sea of data and the solutions needed by the customer. This presentation will address a philosophy and set of methods for applying computational methods to bridge the gap, with diverse examples including noncontact measurement of creep at extreme temperatures, extraction of metals from ores, and power conversion in nuclear-electric spacecraft. Speaker Bio:
Prof. Hyers was elected Fellow of ASM in 2018. He was the ASM Boston Chair in 2015-2016. He has been an active member of the Women in Materials Science and Engineering Committee of ASM International since 2015. After earning his S.B. in Materials Science and Engineering and Ph.D. in Materials Engineering from MIT, Prof. Hyers joined the staff at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center for 4 years, supporting the development of experiments for the International Space Station. He continued that work at the University of Massachusetts, where his current research includes two different projects on additive manufacturing by cold spray and three different NASA flight projects on the International Space Station. While on leave from UMass, he served as President and Chief Technology Officer of Boston Electrometallurgical Corporation, now Boston Metal. He is the owner of RHA Materials, LLC, a company specializing in consultation and contract research on high temperature materials and materials processing for clients in the aerospace and extractive industries.
