Abstract
Picture
Controlling multi-scale structural features of energy materials with precise placement of multiple complementary components enables the study of their complex composition-structure-performance relationships that are required for application-informed device designs. In my lab, we develop bottom-up fabrication methods of such multiscale and multi-component material architecture, combining soft matter phase behavior with electrochemistry. In this talk, I will discuss our recent advances in the fabrication of monolithic anisotropic electrode architectures through Hybrid Inorganic Phase Inversion (HIPI) of soft and hard matter. The architected electrodes possess low-tortuosity pores traversing through the plane of the electrode that are ideal for transport. I will describe process criteria to tune their pore size gradient and distance on the micron scale, tailor the nanoporosity within its matrix, and target a desired composition and crystallinity. I will also present structure-performance relationships of our architected electrodes in batteries that will eventually aid in the design of application-tailored energy storage solutions. In the second part, I will present our recent discovery of a novel thin-film deposition paradigm - the Electrodeposition of Polymer Networks (EPoN), which enables conformal coatings and functional interphases of tunable 10-100s nm on conductive substrates of arbitrary topographies. I will highlight the versatility of EPoN in the context of ultrathin films of polyether-based solid electrolytes.

Dr. Joerg Werner
Assistant Professor
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Materials Science and Engineering Division
Department of Chemistry
Boston University

Dr. Joerg Werner received his Diplom (M.S.) in Chemistry in 2011 from the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, and his Ph.D. in 2016 from the Department of Chemistry at Cornell University under the guidance of Prof. Uli Wiesner. After his postdoc in the group of Prof. Dave Weitz at Harvard University, he started his independent research group at Boston University in 2020 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the MSE Division. His group focuses on spatially controlled synthesis and bottom-up fabrication methods to study the interplay of functional materials with 3D structures across scales, utilizing polymer self-assembly, phase separation, and electrochemistry. He received a DARPA Young Faculty Award in 2023 and Dean’s Catalyst Awards from BU’s College of Engineering in 2020 and 2022. Prof. Werner is a core faculty of the Institute for Global Sustainability and co-founded BU’s Energy and Sustainability Technology (BEST) Lab in 2023, a multi-PI virtual lab that serves as a platform and community for students and faculty to exchange ideas and accelerate their research by open collaboration.
