Abstract
In recent years, metal additive manufacturing has become an increasingly popular and important research topic due to its ability to overcome challenges that cannot be solving using traditional manufacturing processes. Cold spray additive manufacturing is a unique solid state additive process where unlike melt based additive processes, the microstructure and properties of the feedstock powder are retained after processing. Given this, understanding of the feedstock powder microstructure and properties is important for optimizing final cold spray properties. In this talk I will explain the importance of feedstock characterization for cold spray additive manufacturing, and how feedstock can be adjusted for the best possible processing.

Dr. Kyle Leigh Tsaknopoulos is an Assistant Research Professor in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and oversees the technical operations of the Cote Research Lab. She received her BS in Chemical Engineering and MS and PhD in Material Science and Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Dr. Tsaknopoulos has been involved in research for cold spray additive manufacturing and feedstock powder characterization and development for DoD applications for over a decade. Her main research focus includes the characterization and optimization of feedstock materials for cold spray additive manufacturing and wire DED processing. She also investigates the use of computational thermodynamic and kinetic modeling to optimize material properties and microstructure.
